GTI’s experienced staff of engineers and geologists can perform Seismic Refraction Studies for difficult to reach and/or remote locations as a cost effective alternative to conventional drilling services. The seismic refraction method consists of measuring (at known points along the surface of the ground) the travel time of compressional waves generated by an impulsive energy source. The energy source utilized consists of a 12-pound sledgehammer, which is detected by 12 separate geophones, then amplified and recorded by a seismograph. Measurements of time and distance are recorded and plotted on a graph, from which the depth of various layers can be determined along with their individual velocities.

From the seismic wave velocities, GTI engineers can extrapolate geotechnical design parameters such as dry density, angle of internal friction and soil cohesion. This method is especially useful in archaeologically and environmentally sensitive areas. Widely utilized by the telecommunication industry for monopole and lattice tower foundation design in elevated, mountainous areas; this method is also eapplicable to custom home and commercial structure foundation design.

GTI is prepared to provide several geophysical, non-destructive testing services to suit sensitive and/or difficult subsurface exploration needs. GTI utilizes geophysical engineering for various foundation designs, site risk assessments, and site suitability studies. Whether designing a deep foundation system, determining depth to groundwater, or searching for earth fissures, the wide array of geophysical engineering services offered by GTI can meet your needs. These geophysical services offered by GTI include, but are not limited to:
  • Seismic Refraction Studies
  • Electromagnetic Soundings
  • Magnetometer
  • Ground Penetrating Radar
  • Nuclear Soundings
  • Pile Integrity Testing
  • Cross-Hole Sonic Logging
